RAPID'E.coli 2 Medium for Detection and Enumeration
of E.coli and Coliforms |
Approved by AFNOR according to ISO 16140 for
E. coli and other coliforms at 37℃ and E. coli at
44℃.

RAPID'E.coli 2 is also AOAC-RI (Certificate
#050601) and Nordval approved.
|
Intended Use
RAPID'E.coli 2 is a selective chromogenic medium
used for direct enumeration (without colony confirmation)
of E. coli and other coliforms in food products
for human and animal consumption. RAPID'E.coli 2
is not available for water testing in the USA. |

The principle of the medium is based on
simultaneous detection of two enzymatic activities:
• One substrate specific to β-D-galactosidase (GAL) that
induces blue coloration of colonies positive for this enzyme
• One substrate specific to β-D-glucuronidase (GLUC) that
induces pink coloration of colonies positive for this enzyme.
Coliforms (GAL+/GLUC) form blue to green colonies; E. coli
(GAL+/GLUC+) form violet to pink colonies.
GLUC detection gives the culture medium a high specificity.
E. coli is one of the only species of enterobacteria to
possess this enzyme. |

Note: β-D-glucuronidase-negative E. coli
strains exist (approximately 34%), such as E. coli O157.
Some Salmonella serovars and a few Shigella species also
contain β-D-glucuronidase (<1.5%). |
