Three independent Thermal Cyclers in one housing

The Biometra TRIO Thermal Cycler is the only instrument that provides three independent 48 well blocks and heated lids in one housing. Thanks to the multiblock technology three different independent protocols can be run in parallel. The Biometra TRIO offers high throughput in parallel operation (up to 144 x 0.2 ml samples) in combination with the flexibility to run different protocols. This makes the Biometra TRIO Thermal Cycler the perfect instrument for laboratories with the demand for high flexibility and the need often to optimise new PCR-protocols.

User specific quick start of programs

The intuitive software offers very straightforward programming and for GMP-regulated laboratories highly configurable user management, plus extensive tools for system diagnostics as well as documentation of PCR runs. To create PCR protocols the user can select between tabular or graphical programming. The user-specific quick start in combination with the program preview makes tedious searches for previously used PCR programs superfluous.

Temperature Optimisation Step (TOS)

To find the optimal annealing temperature of new primers pairs the Biometra TRIO Thermocycler offers the Temperature Optimisation Step function. Temperature Optimisation Steps, by making use of the three blocks, provide different annealing temperatures in a gradient-like fashion. In the corresponding screen just enter an annealing temperature for the block in the middle and an increment, defining the temperature difference for the first and third block. For maximum ease of use programs with Temperature Optimisation Steps automatically start on all three blocks, there is no need to start and stop the blocks individually.

Temperature Optimisation Step (TOS)

Finding the best primer annealing temperature is crucial for the specificity and efficiency of PCR reactions. Often, only a limited optimization of an experiment is completed, leading to unspecific by products or reduced PCR sensitivity. By using the Biometra Trio Temperature Optimization Step (TOS) function new primer pairs with unknown annealing temperatures can be tested quickly and optimized in very short time. The Temperature Optimization Step (TOS) function makes use of the three sample blocks and provides three different temperatures for a selected program step. Just set the temperature for sample block 2 and define the temperature difference (temperature increment) for block 1 and 3. For maximum ease of use, programs containing Temperature Optimization Steps automatically start on all three sample blocks simultaneously.

Advanced User Management (AUM)

• Three different user groups with default rights
• Rights can be set individually for each user
• User administration can be switched on or off

The Biometra Trio software can manage up to 30 user accounts with three standard user levels available: administrator, users with generic rights and users with limited rights. A convenient menu allows the administrator to configure settings for each user individually by either activating or deactivating specific rights. Access to the instrument can be limited to authorized personnel – avoiding unwanted changes to system settings and PCR protocols – by applying the user administration tool in combination with the password protection of user accounts. The user management can be switched off by the administrator if this feature is not of interest for a workgroup.

Footprint

The Biometra TRIO Thermal Cycler offers the comfort of three thermocyclers in one but has a footprint of only 30 x 38 x 19 cm (W x D x H) a minimum of bench space. By the new airstream concept it it possible to install Biometra TRIO instruments directly side by side, no extra space is needed between the instruments.

User specific quick start of programs

Many other thermal cyclers offer a so called “l(fā)atest program list”. In the latest program list a certain number of PCR programs is collected and offered for quick start. The list is typically ordered only by date and the user has to search for the desired program. In contrast the Biometra TRIO software creates a user specific list for each single sample block and only the latest programs started by the currently logged-in user are offered for quick start. Even a lab member does not use the instrument for a longer time the information on the latest programs started by this user will not get lost.

For maximum convenience the Biometra TRIO software features additionally features the program preview. Before start of a program the protocol steps are summarized in a clearly arranged table by the program preview tool. The program preview therefore provides a comprehensive overview on the protocol structure without the need to access programming screens. The program preview is also available before quick start of programs.

Backup function

The Biometra TRIO software offers a backup function. With the backup function folders, programs, users and right settings can be saved to USB and transferred to other Biometra thermal cyclers. By using the backup function the memory contents of instruments can be synchronized or lost programs and settings can be restored.

High Perfomance Smart Lid (HPSL)

The Biometra TRIO Thermocyclers heated lids prevent condensation and provide reliable contact between samples and thermoblock. The lids are powered by Biometra‘s well known High Performance Smart Lid technology with integrated clutch mechanism which automatically limits the lid pressure applied to the plasticware and thus saves tubes from damage. In addition by formation of a homogeneous air cushion an even temperature distribution between the samples is ensured, significantly improving temperature uniformity. This also serves for reproducible conditions amongst different PCR runs.

The temperature of the independently working lids can be set individually in a range between 30 and 99°C. This ensures optimal conditions also for other applications as PCR like e.g. enzymatic restriction reactions. With one press on the front button, the lids gently swing open and arrest in their end position.

Display and Software

The large 7'' TFT touch display of the Biometra TRIO Thermocycler are arranged at an angle to ensure ergonomic, reflection-free programming.

The intuitive Biometra TRIO software offers easy spreadsheet programming philosophy. New programs are easily created in a well arranged screen that avoids the need to toggle between different windows. This makes the creation of new or editing existing programs fast and easy. One touch leads from the spreadsheet to the alternative graphical programming mode. For easy retrieval, programs can be stored in 30 individual subdirectories (optionally password protected). By the administrator function the accumulation of unused programs or user directories can be managed to keep the memory content up-to date.

The Biometra TRIO is delivered with a folder containing pre-installed protocols for various PCR applications. The pre-installed protocols can be started directly or copied into any user directory to become modified as desired. The protocols therefore offer an excellent tool to obtain the desired result as quickly as possible and without much programming effort. Another useful option to accelerate the way to results is the protocol quick start option. For each user the Biometra TRIO individually displays the five latest used programs for quick start. Thus for routinely used programs there is no need to toggle between different windows and to screen the user directory for the wanted program.
